Spike for a Cause a Big Hit!
A big thanks to everyone who participated in the 4th Annual Spike for a Cause Volleyball Tournament, the most successful of these events yet! The Colon Cancer Coalition was pleased to team with Vaughn Hastings from VH1 Volleyball for this year’s tournament, which was played in memory of Rusty Lurwick, who lost his own battle with colon cancer. Even though the weather tried to not co-operate, it was only a minimal amount of rain that fell and it didn't dampen anyone's enthusiasm. There was great action all day long and it was fun to see old friends and gathering with some new ones.
Even with the threat of bad weather, the event drew around 260 players.
Now for the fun part!
How much did the event raise this year? Including the value of the prizes for winners, items given away in the raffles and the fundraising by participants (donations are still trickling in and there is still time to donate online), we've broken the $15,000 mark!!! Monies will help promote awareness and screening for colorectal cancer in the greater Raleigh area.
Kim Roberts was the top fundraiser on the getyourrearingear.com website and she won some free tourney entries, an outdoor ball and a couple of other things. Thanks for all your hard work Kim!
John Bell was the winner of the Park & Sun net system in the $5 raffle
The silent auction was a great addition to this year's event and a special thanks to everyone who got in on the bidding fun! It got kind of cutthroat down at Napper Tandy's but that made it that much more interesting. And profitable!
Thanks to all our sponsors who donated gift cards and the like for winner's prizes and raffle items including: Crooked Creek, Gravy, CoalMarch Productions, Raleigh Times, Mura, Fox & Hound, Sitti, Strategic Investment Groups, WCVC, Raleigh Parks & Recreation, the Duck & Dumpling and the Pit. Also a big thanks to Matt at Buffalo Brothers and Paddy at Napper Tandy's for letting participants congregate before and after the Tournament.
Also, thanks go out to:
