More than 1, 600 participants joined together to raise awareness and greatly needed funding for colorectal cancer in Philadelphia. This is the largest inaugural event hosted by the Colorectal Cancer Coalition, and it was the fruition of a solid year of strong planning by local volunteers, sponsors and motivated friends and family.
This first time event attracted over 50 Teams, honoring those battling colon cancer and those who did not survive their fight. Equally wonderful to see were the many survivors in their bright blue “Super Survivor” shirts, reminding us all that this cancer can be stopped if treated early. Funds raised at the event will benefit Jefferson University and the Kimmel Cancer Center for initiatives in colorectal cancer screening, treatment and prevention projects.
We were so pleased to be joined by the family of Tony Snow, former White House Press Secretary, who fought a very public battle with colon cancer. This year’s Children’s Run was named in his honor and his family, including his sister Jenny who was an event co-chair, helped place the medals around the necks of our youngest road racers.
Event co-chair, Maria Grasso, inspired and touched the crowd with her own story of losing her grandfather and father to colon cancer. We were pleased to have the help of Philadelphia Mayor Nutter and NBC 10 Meteorologist Bill Henley to help start the activities.
The event owes much of its success to its wonderful volunteers, coordinated beautifully by Co-Chair Shona Bradley, and our very generous sponsors. It was really exciting to bring together both so many dedicated medical institutions with those that help make an event like this fun.
Plans are all ready underway for next year’s events. Besides an early request for warmer weather, we are looking at changes to the timing system and for additional packet pick hours.
We look forward to seeing everyone March 21, 2010.
